An early portrait of Mapplethorpe's dating from the period when he first started photographing his fashionably hip and glamorously rich friends. Hockney and Mapplethorpe met at the Chelsea Hotel, in 1970, where the young photographer was then living with the poet Patti Smith, and quickly became friends. Hockney went on to be photographed by Mapplethorpe several times, including this well-known image.
